Examinations to Protect Your Oral Health
Dental examinations, which are recommended twice yearly, allow your dentist to identify any oral issues affecting your teeth and oral structures and make a plan to treat them accordingly.
Your dentist will thoroughly inspect your teeth, gums, jaw and bite during your examination. These checkups may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and any other diagnostic procedures that may be deemed beneficial.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is a serious disease that may affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your routine exam, your dentist will examine your mouth, looking for any signs of this disease. Regular screenings allow the best chance of early diagnosis and treatment for an ideal outcome.
Treating Dry Mouth
If you've been experiencing dry mouth, it's important to inform your dentist as it can lead to oral issues with your teeth, gums, or overall oral health. Treatment options may include a topical fluoride treatment during your appointment, a daily fluoride rinse, or the use of an alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash.
Professional Dental Hygiene Cleaning
During your routine visit, your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums to prevent and treat disease.
They will begin by using a scaler to remove tartar and plaque buildup. Next, they will use a polisher and coarse toothpaste to remove any leftover stains or plaque, followed by a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If you or your child is at a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
